Millions of people living in the Midwestern region of the U.S. received their first blizzard warnings of the season on Thursday, NBC News reported.

Parts of northeastern South Dakota and western Minnesota were issued blizzard warnings on Thursday. Both areas are part of “Blizzard Alley,” according to NBC News.

November blizzards are a rarity; the last time there was a blizzard warning in November was in 2016 in South Dakota, NBC News noted.

Eleven million citizens were also alerted of wind threats, with gusts up to 50 mph Thursday evening.

Extreme northern parts of North Dakota and Minnesota are expected to see 8 inches of snowfall during the second half of the day, NBC News reported.

The expected snowstorm with high winds will cause poor visibility and dangerous travel conditions for citizens, NBC News reported.

The storm is expected to shift east on Friday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region.
