Special counsel Robert Mueller condemned Paul Manafort for failing to take responsibility in his sentencing memorandum.
“Additionally, the defendant’s brief is replete with claims that are at odds with acceptance of responsibility,” Mueller said in a new filing Tuesday evening. “The defendant blames everyone from the Special Counsel’s Office to his Ukrainian clients for his own criminal choices.”
The filing seeks to persuade a judge to reject Manafort’s plea for leniency at the upcoming sentencing hearing, which will take place Thursday in Alexandria, Va. Manafort faces up to 24 years in prison.
Manafort said in his filing that he felt he would not be facing the charges if Mueller had not been appointed.
“In addition to a lack of remorse, Manafort has his facts wrong: he was being investigated by prosecutors in this district and the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice prior to the May 2017 appointment of the Special Counsel,” Mueller said in his response.
