Russian health officials reported more than 14,000 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, setting a single-day record for the country, which has struggled to reduce its rate of new infections as many other nations have seen new infections decline.

The Moscow Times first reported the data, which was announced on a Russian government website detailing the country’s coronavirus response.

Some 239 people died from COVID-19 across Russia on Wednesday, a number that lagged behind both Russia’s previous daily total and the U.S.’s last available daily total, which was 351 on Monday.

Russia’s continued surge of cases comes as the global death toll from COVID-19 has passed 1 million and several countries have struggled with reducing their rates of new infections. In the U.S., the rate of new infections remains higher than during the spring, when cases spiked.

The Moscow Times reported Wednesday that 90 percent of hospital beds across Russia are occupied, even though one in four new COVID-19 infections in the country have been asymptomatic, suggesting that a further rise in new infections could overload the hospital system.
