Steve Deace: Hacksaw Ridge — the best movie I've seen so far this year.

Saw Hacksaw Ridge, and it’s the best movie I’ve seen this year. A packed theater applauded the movie at the end for good reason. Only other movie I’ve been to this year where that happened was Free State of Jones.

This is the Christian American Sniper if you will, in that war is depicted in all its macabre horror with no punches pulled by director Mel Gibson. Similar to his approach to the Passion and Apocalypto.

There are some mild profanities, no nudity except dudes’ butts in a military barrack, and only hinted at salaciousness. So the R rating is mainly for the violence. Your mature teenagers should be able to handle it if you want them to see a film that celebrates standing tall for what you believe in. Not to mention the ironic timing of a movie where a believer refuses to succumb to a binary choice that violates his conscience.

Andrew Garfield is tremendous as Private Doss, but Vince Vaughn steals the show as the drill sergeant. Highly, very highly recommend.
