Ted Cruz Grills DHS Official Into Admitting Refugee’s Own Testimony Can Be ‘Basis’ for Admission
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) relentlessly grilled a top Department of Homeland Security official on Wednesday until he admitted that testimony alone can the “basis” for admitting refugees into the United States.
Speaking before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Cruz read from a DHS memorandum that stated the “refugee program is particularly vulnerable of fraud due to loose evidentiary requirements where at times the testimony of an applicant alone is sufficient for approval.”
Leon Rodriguez, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services at DHS, first said he disagreed with the phrasing of the memorandum, but was forced to clarify when Cruz refused to drop the issue.
“Is it true or false that the testimony of the applicant alone can be sufficient for approval?” Cruz pressed.
“It is considered, it depends on the case,” Rodriguez responded.
“It’s a very simple question,” Cruz shot back. “Is it true or false that the testimony of the applicant alone can be sufficient for approval?”
Rodriguez conceded that there are “cases where the testimony is not necessarily corroborated by documents, but it is always tested against country conditions and other information.”
