The Trump administration is reportedly diverting millions of dollars from other agencies to be used for immigrant detention facilities and hearing locations for asylum-seekers who have been forced to wait in Mexico.

Multiple news outlets reported that $271 million is being taken from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agencies, including from the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Disaster Relief Fund, citing department officials and a letter sent by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.) to acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan.

NBC posted a copy of a reprogramming notification sent to Congress detailing the changes.

According to the note, $116 million will be taken from agencies including Customs and Border Protection, the Coast Guard and the Transportation Security Administration to pay mostly for detention beds, but also transportation and removal.

NBC reported that 6,800 beds for detained migrants will be funded.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement will receive $155 million from the FEMA relief fund to establish immigration court facilities, Roybal-Allard wrote in the letter, which was first reported by NBC but also obtained by The Hill.
