Utah governor admires Kasich but will huddle with Cruz as endorsement looms

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert is planning a Saturday meeting with Ted Cruz as he weighs an endorsement for the Texas senator.

In a phone interview, Herbert confirmed the meeting and said he plans to grill Cruz on “some of our unique challenges out here” — from public land use and national parks to energy production and endangered species.

Herbert, who is up for reelection himself this year, has withheld his endorsement so far. Though he expresses heartfelt admiration for his colleague, Ohio Gov. John Kasich, he acknowledges that Cruz is more in line ideologically with Utah conservatives. The state is holding its caucuses on Tuesday.

….

Herbert said he expects that Trump’s decision to skip Monday’s scheduled Salt Lake City debate — the first presidential debate scheduled to be held in Utah — would stick in the craw of some caucus-goers.

“For some, that will be a big issue,” he said. “We have an opportunity to kind of spotlight Utah. … We are probably the most successfully red state in America today. It would be nice for us to be able to tell the press about that as we come here and host the world.”
