Bush, 70, led the pack of 16 veterans and scores of cycling friends though the prairies, thickets and canyons of his 1,600-acre ranch off Prairie Chapel Road. The three-day event, now in its sixth year, is meant to lift the spirits of wounded veterans and bring more awareness to their struggles.

“They were in harm’s way. They got hurt and now they’re battling back,” Bush said in an interview Friday. “One way they’ve done so is through mountain biking. . . . This is an endurance ride, but it’s also a ride that celebrates recovery. These are people who have been through enormous difficulty, but they are tremendous assets to the country. It’s like getting an advanced graduate degree in life at an early age.”
