Prominent Trump supporter knocks his attacks on Gold Star Army family of fallen Captain Humayan Khan

WASHINGTON — One of Donald Trump’s earliest and best-known backers thinks he was out of line when he criticized the Gold Star family of fallen Captain Humayan Khan.

Former Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), a 35-year Army veteran and early Trump backer, suggested that Trump should apologize after the Republican nominee insulted Khan’s family and suggested his mother remained silent at the Democratic National Convention because as a Muslim she wasn’t allowed to speak.

“If it were me the easiest thing to do is say ‘I apologize,’” he said. “Their son’s service is beyond reproach.”

And while Brown said he knows how Trump “feels about the men and women who’ve given their lives” and stood by his support of the media mogul, he expressed frustration that Trump had shot himself in the foot once again by insulting the family of a slain soldier.
