Former President George W. Bush announced Monday that he and the former first lady will donate to relief efforts in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey, which has inundated southeastern Texas with massive amounts of rainfall.

“Laura and I are pleased to donate to Team Rubicon, the Red Cross, and the Salvation Army. We hope our fellow citizens will join us in giving to these groups and others that are making a difference on the ground,” Bush said in a statement, noting that he had spoken to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) about the storm’s impact earlier in the morning.

Bush, who as a former governor of Texas has strong ties to the Lone Star State, praised emergency response efforts and volunteers for their dedication.

“Laura and I are moved by the heroic work of the first responders and volunteers who are putting themselves at risk to save others. The devastation breaks our hearts, but we are confident that these strong communities will recover and thrive,” he said in his statement.

“We are proud of the people of Texas for showing the resilience and compassion of our state, and we pray for their safety and well-being.”
