Cruz defends vote on Sandy relief bill: 'Filled with pork'

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is defending his decision to vote against a Superstorm Sandy relief bill as torrential rain and flood waters now ravage his state.

“Every Republican, including Texas Republicans, agreed that hurricane funding is an important and critical role for the federal government,” Cruz said on Monday, according to CNN.

Cruz added, however, that the Sandy bill was “a $50 billion bill filled with pork and unrelated spending that wasn’t hurricane relief.”

“It was simply local members of Congress spending on their pet projects and two-thirds of what was spent in that bill had little or nothing to do with Hurricane Sandy,” Cruz said.

His comments come amid recovery efforts in Texas in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, which continues to bring rain and flooding to the region.

Oh yes. All the Cruz haters are coming out of the woodwork to dredge up the Sandy aid bill again. What none of them will mention is the amount of pork in that bill. Alaska fisheries, new vehicles for Homeland Security -what do these have to do with Sandy? And what little aid earmarked for storm relief went to various departments, bureaus and agencies with no procedures in place to account for where their share of the aid went. So how do we know where the money went? Maybe new offices for the heads of these agencies and bureaus, nice vacations in exotic locales disguised as workshops or training sesssions, or maybe into some bureaucrat’s pocket.

What I do know is, as Ted and the other opponents knew would happen when they voted against the Sandy relief bill, the aid didn’t get to most of the people who needed it. Ted and the others who voted against this aid were right to do so. Let’s hope the idiots in congress do a better job on the Harvey package this time.
