The City of Dallas is planning to open its Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center to 5,000 Hurricane Harvey evacuees from Houston.

The Texas state government formally requested that Dallas open the “mega shelter,” and have it ready to take in evacuees by Tuesday morning, city Office of Emergency Management Director Rocky Vaz said in a statement.

“We’re committed to doing whatever it takes to accommodate our fellow Texans who may need assistance,” Vaz said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has already issued a state disaster declaration for 50 counties in the state following the Friday landfall of Harvey, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm.
