The FBI executed a search warrant on former President Trump’s home in Florida on Monday, the ex-president said, lashing out at law enforcement for what he called “political persecution.”
“My beautiful home Mar A Lago in Palm Beach, Florida is currently under siege, raided and occupied by a large group of FBI agents,” Trump said in a statement that included a link for donations to his political action committee.
……..
The New York Times reported that the search appeared to be focused on records that Trump brought with him to the Mar-a-Lago estate after leaving the White House.
Last year, the National Archives reportedly asked the Justice Department to investigate after authorities recovered 15 boxes of materials from Trump’s Florida home that should have been left with government records keepers.
In recent weeks, the Justice Department has been focusing on Trump’s efforts to remain in power through a false elector scheme, transmitting what campaign officials referred to as “fake” election certificates in order to reverse the 2020 election in key states won by President Biden. The department has reportedly convened a federal grand jury to investigate the scheme, in addition to the grand jury investigation into the Jan. 6 attack.

You know how much evidence it takes to sign off on a no-knock raid at the home of a former President?

Two Words: Probable Cause#TrumpRaided
— Kurt Bardella (@kurtbardella) August 8, 2022
/2 To get a federal search warrant, a federal agent submits an affidavit under oath to a federal magistrate judge, setting forth where they want to search, for what items, and what the probable cause is that those things are evidence of a federal crime and are there.

I don't know what judge granted the warrant, but the standard for a warrant is unspeakably high. No judge wants his or her name on that without all the cover in the world. I don't know what they were looking for, but they seem to have known exactly where to find it.
— Richard M. Nixon (@dick_nixon) August 8, 2022
Yes. You don't do this because of a "transport error" or some kind of debate over who owns what piece of paper. In this case a judge doesn't sign off just because the government wants its property back. Something else is going on. https://t.co/WuMLyuLSV5

Just to clear this up, for anyone unfortunate enough to be watching Fox, presidents do not have security clearances.

“I bet Hitler’s FBI generals never broke his safe!” Trump, probably.

Is it fair to assume you don’t raid the home of a former president unless you’ve met some pretty high bar? https://t.co/4YoP40HboT

Breaking: FBI searches Mar-a-Lago, Trump says https://t.co/cNa2LKprFn
— POLITICO (@politico) August 8, 2022
……..Two sources familiar with the search said it was related to allegations that Trump allies improperly removed boxes of presidential records from the White House after leaving office — including some that may have included classified information. One of those sources said the raid took “hours.”
Trump, who was the first to confirm the raid, said in a statement that his resort was “under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”
“After working and cooperating with the relevant Government agencies, this unannounced raid on my home was not necessary or appropriate,” Trump said.
The former president was not present at Mar-a-Lago and was at Trump Tower in New York City, according to a person familiar with the situation.
The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s offices in Washington, D.C., and for the Southern District of Florida didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. Spokespeople at Justice Department headquarters in Washington declined to comment. The Secret Service and Palm Beach Police Department deferred comment to the FBI. Two sources familiar with the matter said top Biden White House officials were not given advance notice of the raid.

THREAD: “What’s the difference between this and Watergate?” Donald Trump raged in a statement Monday night after FBI agents.
Well, as a Watergate and FBI historian, four things stand out to me:
— Garrett M. Graff (@vermontgmg) August 8, 2022
2) A search warrant means an independent federal judge ALSO signed off on the probable cause and, independently, believes evidence there was likely a crime committed AND that more evidence would be found at Mar-a-Lago. That's huge too.
— Garrett M. Graff (@vermontgmg) August 8, 2022
4) Taken together, this is one of the most significant, sensitive, and politically explosive actions the US Justice Department and FBI has ever taken—one of a tiny handful of times it's ever investigated a president.
Bottom line: The FBI & DOJ must've known they had the goods.

It was a beautiful raid. A perfect raid. People tell me they've never seen such as perfect raid.

McCarthy is trying to distract from a momentous day where the AG, FBI dir & a fed'l judge all agreed probable cause existed that evidence of crime would be found at Trump's home. The AG goes to the Hill for oversight hearings every year & the complies w/records retention laws. https://t.co/y5b2WCZ9JW

This is the Republican nominee for governor in Arizona. Endorsed by the @RGA. She is promising to withdraw from United States if elected. This is why I say that Trump didn’t change the @GOP, he revealed it. https://t.co/6wONNHVql4

Your little staffers are working the phones telling the big donor types, "See? This is Ron's shot. He'll say something about it to fool Trump, but this is GREAT for 2024!" https://t.co/HIoHrCdHFn

The same Republicans who had no problem with Trump promising to prosecute his opponent *while running against her* and who had no problem with Trump's banana republic threats against her are now just incensed at a Federal judge approving a search warrant. pic.twitter.com/L397ZRtudr
