Homeland Security: Spy devices in Washington DC are tracking cellphone calls and messages

U.S. government has publicly acknowledged the existence of devices thought to be used by spies and criminals in the national’s capital to track individuals’ cellphones and intercept calls and messages.

The Department of Homeland Security, in a March 26 letter to Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said it identified unauthorized cell-site simulators in the metro area last year.

Until now, American intelligence and law enforcement agencies that use such equipment have been silent on the matter, according to the Associated Press.

It has long been suspected in Washington, D.C. that these cellphone-site simulators, as they’re known, have been used by foreign powers.
