Ron Johnson is expected to seek a third term in the Senate this year despite a prior vow to serve no more than two.

His decision would give Republicans their top candidate in a critical swing state — but also give Democrats a motivating foe.

Here’s the latest: Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is expected to run for reelection this year, according to three GOP sources. That move will defy his past two-term pledge and set up a major test of Republicans’ effort to retake the Senate majority.

Johnson’s anticipated decision to run again comes after months of speculation about his political future.

The political implications: Wisconsin is a key battleground state ahead of a midterm election where the GOP only needs to net one seat to make Mitch McConnell majority leader again. President Joe Biden won the state by less than a percentage point, and Democrats have a crowded primary to take on the GOP incumbent.

This is a shift: In recent months, Johnson had warmed to the idea of seeking a third term in the upper chamber despite his previous vow to only serve two terms, citing the necessity for the GOP to win back control of the Senate in this year’s midterm elections. But he hasn’t made any ironclad commitments publicly or to his colleagues.

Who he’s been: Johnson has been a steadfast defender of former President Donald Trump, who narrowly won Wisconsin in 2016.

Why Dems might welcome him to the race: Johnson has promoted misinformation about Covid vaccines and sought to undermine public confidence in them, a stark contrast with the rest of the Senate GOP.
