Russia’s top foreign official says that President Trump invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to the White House when the two leaders spoke on the phone last month.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Trump said he would be “glad” to see Putin at the White House during the call, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti and reported by Reuters.

“We proceed from the fact that the U.S. president in a telephone conversation … made such an invitation, said he would be glad to see [Putin] in the White House, would then be glad to meet on a reciprocal visit,” Lavrov said.

“He returned to this topic a couple of times, so we let our American colleagues know that we do not want to impose, but we also do not want to be impolite, and that considering that President Trump made this proposal, we proceed from the position that he will make it concrete,” he added.

The call, which took place March 20, drew national attention due to Trump congratulating Putin on his reelection victory, despite his national security advisers warning him not to do so.

The call took place soon after the U.S. joined the United Kingdom in blaming Russia for the poisoning of a former Russian spy and his daughter in the U.K.
