Although Texas Sen. Ted Cruz promised to work closely with the Trump presidential administration, he also warned on Sunday that there will be “pitchforks and torches in the street” if Donald Trump reneges on any campaign promises.

“If we’re given the White House and both houses of Congress and we don’t deliver, I think there will be pitchforks and torches in the streets — and I think quite rightly,” Cruz told journalist Martha Raddatz in an appearance on ABC’s This Week.

Noting that Republicans will soon control the White House and both chambers of Congress, Cruz said he was ready to “deliver on the promises we’ve made” to deregulate the energy industry and repeal the Affordable Care Act, better known as Obamacare.

I think that if Trump and Congress don’t deliver on a lot of things in short order that Trump will mark the high water mark of the GOP. In 2010 and 2014, GOP voters answered the call of Mitch McConnell and John Boehner who said they would resist Obama if they only had a majority. They were given their majorities and damn little was done with them. If Trump’s many promises are delivered on, or at least some effort isn’t seen as being devoted to filling those promises, then the populist wave that brought Trump into office and retained Mitch McConnell’s majority in a year in which he was expected to lose it will recede. And once it goes out, it is gone forever.
