Trump, allies charged with racketeering scheme over bid to subvert Georgia election

It is his fourth indictment.

A grand jury in Georgia has indicted former President Donald Trump and numerous allies on racketeering charges for a sweeping attempt to corrupt the 2020 election by subverting Joe Biden’s victory in that state.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis leveled the state-law charges Monday night after a two-year investigation. In addition to Trump, Willis charged former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and attorneys Rudy Giuliani, John Eastman, Sidney Powell, Jeff Clark, Ken Chesebro and Jenna Ellis, key figures in Trump’s bid to subvert the 2020 election.

Willis charged the group with orchestrating a sprawling effort to disrupt the election, including by submitting false slates of presidential electors to Congress, making false representations to courts, misusing the power of the Justice Department and pressuring then-Vice President Mike Pence to overturn the election himself.

It’s the fourth and by far the most wide-ranging set of criminal charges Trump faces as he seeks to reclaim the Oval Office in 2024. The indictment comes two weeks after special counsel Jack Smith charged Trump with a federal conspiracy to derail the transfer of power.
