The Cruz marriage is based on an interesting, unique culinary diversity
Roll Call has an interesting profile about Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas that sheds some new light on his relationship between the once and likely future presidential candidate and his wife and two young daughters. Heidi Cruz describes herself as a “California #Vegetarian” whereas the Senator, being a proper Texan, is a meat eater, with a special love for bacon. Ms. Cruz is trying to raise their daughters to be vegetarians, an effort that Senator Cruz continues to undermine by slipping them slices of bacon.
The reason Heidi Cruz calls herself a “California vegetarian” is that the phrase “Texas vegetarian” is a contradiction in terms, sort of like “right wing socialist” or “musical rapper.” Meat eating, mainly the product of #barbecue, is as Texan as Friday night football and shooting guns. Indeed, Cruz once famously cooked slices of bacon using an AR-15, combining two of the Texan pleasures, while at the same time poking gun control advocates and vegetarians in the eye.

The upshot of this revelation is that this couple really needs to reside in the White House, bringing as they will two unique culinary cultures to state dinners. President Lyndon Johnson was famous for his Texas barbecues. Smoked brisket, links, and of course bacon alongside California vegetarian fare would show off the unique diversity of American cuisine. It is sad that this will not happen next year.
