North Korea's nuke freeze could be because mountain test site collapsed

North Korea’s nuclear test site under Mount Mantap mountain in the northwest part of the country has collapsed, two separate groups of Chinese scientist confirmed Wednesday.

The collapse puts China and other nearby nations at risk of radioactive exposure, and could be the cause of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declaring Friday he would freeze nuclear tests and shut down the site, the South China Morning Post reported.

A group of researchers discovered that the most recent of the five blasts, conducted on Sept. 3, tore open a 654 foot-wide hole in the mountain, which caused it to then collapse in on itself.

Another research group concluded that the collapse created almost a chimney-like structure that would allow radioactive fallout from the blast zone to be released into the air above.
