Roy Blunt: Trump can institute 'extreme vetting' without travel ban

Top GOP Senator Roy Blunt questioned whether President Trump’s travel ban on six majority Muslim countries is needed after Trump touted it after the London terror attack Saturday.

Blunt, R-Mo., said on “Fox News Sunday” the White House initially pushed the travel ban so the administration can put in place extreme vetting of new entrants into the U.S.

“The president does certainly have the right to put in place extreme vetting,” said Blunt, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. “It has been four months since they said they needed four months to put that in place. I think they can do that without a travel ban and I hope they are.”

The Supreme Court will decide the fate of the ban, which itself is a revised version of an earlier ban that was struck down by lower courts.
