Former South Carolina congressman to Paul Ryan: ‘Don’t obstruct justice. Put country first.’

A former South Carolina congressman who was part of the committee that impeached President Bill Clinton accused Paul Ryan of lying on Friday and urged him to take the Russia investigation seriously.

In a series of tweets Friday morning, Bob Inglis criticized the House speaker for saying Thursday that Republicans would not call for an impeachment of a Democratic president if they faced the same charges as President Donald Trump.

“You know this isn’t true,” tweeted Inglis, who represented the state’s 4th Congressional District from 1993 to 1999 and again from 2005 to 2011. “You know that you would be inquiring into impeachment if this were a D.”

After the Comey hearing, Ryan defended the president in a press conference.

“The president’s new at this. He’s new to government,” Ryan said of the commander-in-chief. “So he probably wasn’t steeped in the long-running protocols that establish the relationships between DOJ, the FBI and White House. He’s just new to this.”

During his time in the House of Representatives, Inglis called on former President Bill Clinton to resign in 1998 following the scandal of Clinton’s extramarital affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

However, Inglis said Friday it is not time to draft articles of impeachment, the set of formal documents required to impeach a public official.

“But it is time to pursue the Russia investigation with vigor,” he tweeted at Ryan.

He continued tweeting that if the investigation does lead to the president, his family or his campaign “so be it.”

“Don’t obstruct justice,” Inglis warned Ryan. “Put country first.”
