Eleven states filed a lawsuit against the Obama administration Wednesday, over its “directive” to all U.S. public schools to let self-identifying transgendered students use the bathroom or locker room of their preference, Fox News reports.

The suit was filed in a Texas federal court in response to the directive handed down to schools by the Obama administration earlier this month.

“Defendants have conspired to turn workplaces and educational settings across the country into laboratories for a massive social experiment, flouting the democratic process, and running roughshod over commonsense policies protecting children and basic privacy rights,” the lawsuit says.

Joining Texas in the suit were: Alabama, Wisconsin, West Virginia, Tennessee, Arizona’s Department of Education, Maine Gov. Paul LePage, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Utah and Georgia.

The states in the lawsuit argue that such a mandate would have to come from Congress, the branch of government given the power to write laws by the U.S. Constitution.
