A 9-year old boy from Belgium will study for a doctorate in the U.S. after his parents withdrew him from a Dutch University.

The parents of Laurent Simons told CNN on Tuesday that their son would attend an unnamed U.S. college and study for a PhD in electrical engineering.

Simons was previously enrolled at a Dutch technical school, Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE), but was withdrawn after school officials declined to let Simons graduate on an early schedule supported by his parents.

Laurent’s father Alexander Simons characterized the withdrawal as a response to what he said was TAU’s attempt to block his son’s enrollment in the U.S. school concurrently.

“The way they treat things, it’s not correct,” he told CNN. “Laurent is not their belonging.”

School officials, however, disputed Simons’s characterization of the events in their own statement to CNN, telling the news network that the boy had still been offered an accelerated course of study towards his degree.
