Multiple people died including a police officer in a shooting at a Boulder, Colorado supermarket on Monday, law enforcement officials said.

A suspect in the shooting is in custody and is currently being treated for injuries. Police would not confirm if there were any other suspects involved.

Boulder Police Department Commander Kerry Yamaguchi said during a press conference near the scene multiple people were killed but would not confirm the exact number of victims. Authorities said they would not make public the number of victims until all families were notified.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier Monday that at least six people including an officer were killed, citing law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation.

A live television feed showed a man being led away from the scene, handcuffed, bloodied and partially naked, the Journal reported. Police would not confirm if the person being led away in the video was a suspect.

Authorities said they would not yet reveal details of a motive by the shooter. They also did not reveal the weapon that was used or any possible connection between the gunman and the supermarket or the people who were shot.

The gunman has been identified as Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, of Colorado. Of course, there is speculation he is an ISIS terrorist or a wannabe.

But the bodies weren’t even cold yet and already there were calls for gun control, a euphemism for gun confiscation. I still say instead of the usual knee-jerk calls for taking away our guns, there should be more done to address the root causes of these shootings. If this was indeed terrorism, then that should be dealt with. If this was a guy who just snapped, then let’s do more to make mental health care more accessible or whatever.

And how about focusing more on the gun crime that happens every day — gangbangers shooting at each other, dysfunctional families shooting each other over silly disagreements such as what to watch on tv, violent robberies, carjackings, home invasions, drug deals gone bad and all the rest?

Taking away guns from law abiding citizens will not prevent or even reduce the crimes we see every day. It definitely will not prevent the next mass shooting.
