With just over a week left before the primary election day, Mary Thomas is in the fight of her life in Florida’s Second Congressional District. Thomas, a conservative Republican, is looking to be the first elected Indian-American woman in congress. She has been endorsed by Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio (A, 94%) the head of the House Freedom Caucus, and is being hit with an onslaught of money and advertisements from the Establishment, including $170,000 being spent in the last week by the group that unseated Tim Huelskamp.

Florida’s Second Congressional District is in the panhandle and includes Panama City and the state capital of Tallahassee. It has been a swing district that is currently represented by freshman Congresswoman Gwen Graham, a Democrat. She is not seeking reelection. Prior to that, it was represented by Steve Southerland, a Republican who won in the Tea Party wave of 2010. It had been represented by Democrats for 20 years prior to that election. The Cook Political Report regards this as a pickup opportunity for the GOP and has classified it a “Likely Republican” district, meaning the winner of the Aug. 30 primary is expected to win the general election.

The Republican primary sees three candidates: Neal Dunn, the establishment favorite, is a surgeon; former U.S. Attorney Ken Sukhia; and Thomas. The real race is between Dunn and Thomas, who have both raised far and away the most money in the election cycle and are airing the most advertising.

Over the weekend, the ESA Fund, the prime mover against Huelskamp, notified the FEC that they are spending $178,500 in the final weeks against Thomas.
