Country music star Charley Pride dies from coronavirus complications

Country music legend Charley Pride died on Saturday at the age of 86 from coronavirus complications.

Public relations firm 2911 Media confirmed the singer’s death in a statement, adding that the music legend passed away in Dallas.

Pride’s death comes one month after his last performance, on Nov. 11 at the Country Music Awards, where he received a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Born in Sledge, Miss., on March 18, 1934, Pride was country music’s first Black superstar and the first Black member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Between 1967 and 1987, Pride had 52 Top 10 country hits, won three Grammy Awards and became RCA Records’s top-selling country music artist. Among his hits were “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin,’” “Is Anybody Goin’ to San Antone” and “Mountain of Love.”

Among the celebrities grieving his death is fellow country music legend Dolly Parton.

    Mr. Pride was never a controversial figure unlike many celebrities. Married to one woman for decades and while he faced some racism, one didn’t see him on tv constantly carrying on about it. I suppose he let his music define him, not the color of his skin. And I think eventually, no one noticed his darker skin. They just loved his music.

    Did some reading on Mr. Pride. Never knew he also played baseball in the Negro Leagues, although his older brother was the better known ballplayer. At one point, he and another player were traded for a used team bus.

    Rest in peace, Mr. Pride and thank you for some great music.
