George W. Bush called Corker to lobby for Tillerson

President George W. Bush didn’t support Donald Trump in the election. But now that Trump has won the White House, the former president is helping him stock his Cabinet.

Bush called Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) this week to try and get Corker to support Trump’s nominee to be secretary of state, Rex Tillerson. Corker will oversee Tillerson’s confirmation, which has made some Republicans queasy about the ExxonMobil CEO’s business ties to Russia and Tillerson’s chumminess with Vladimir Putin.

“Had a very good conversation with Secretary of State nominee Rex Tillerson yesterday and am looking forward to meeting with him in January,” Corker said on Twitter Friday afternoon. “Also appreciated a call I received from President George W. Bush, who spoke highly of Mr. Tillerson and offered support for his nomination.”

A Corker aide confirmed that the call happened on Thursday.
