Hey, Trump, THIS is the pain caused by minimum wage hikes

This past week, Donald Trump stunned Republicans who nominated him just the week before, when he told Bill O’Reilly that he supported raising the minimum wage to $10. Trump reiterated the stance in a press conference the next day. This goes not just conservative orthodoxy, but even against views held by moderate Republicans.

Besides the economic arguments to be made against raising the minimum wage, there are real world personal consequences for countless workers trying to gain a foothold into the economy.  Raising the wage also hurts small business owners who are struggling to grow their businesses.

Take for example the story of Mitch Hall:

  • Hall tried to fund a gap semester in Seattle, Washington by working in the hospitality industry. While a student at the College of William and Mary he was able to make $500 a week, part-time with a $2.13 minimum wage for tipped workers. As he explained at The Federalist, he was unable to find any work in Seattle, even though he was qualified and had a good work history. This was due to even tipped workers being subject to the new minimum wage rules in Seattle. He explained how this hurt not only him, but people looking for entry level full time work.

….

That study proves that the actual minimum wage is $0.

Not only that but the minimum wage can disqualify some for government benefits.

  • Minimum wage increase can actually disqualify some for government benefits. “The Cliff effect;” “About a year ago, Stephen Williams learned that he made too much money to continue receiving childcare support from the state … Iowa pulled Williams’ childcare assistance, he said, because he got a wage bump to $12 per hour — putting his total income over the program’s income limit by $9. Without the assistance, his childcare cost for his 4-year-old daughter jumped from $70 per month to $600 per month.”

There are countless stories of how the minimum wage affects business owners ability to run their own businesses for the benefit of themselves, and their employees.

Here are a few:

  • Like in Seattle, Santa Clara, California not only raised its minimum wage, it made that wage payable to tipped workers. That has been devastating to small restaurants. For instance, By the Bucket, a small restaurant, had to lay off six employees when the wage hike took effect. Not only that, the business owner’s  profits are being cut by $75,000. Money that he could have used to expand the business.

….

As CR Executive Editor Gaston Mooney explained, conservatives need to hold all candidates responsible for reckless policy ideas, including Donald Trump.
