All shops, restaurants and cafés will be closed except for grocery stores and pharmacies.

ROME — Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced further measures to try and contain the spread of coronavirus.

All shops, restaurants and cafés will be closed 24/7 and businesses and factories will have to limit activities as much as possible, encouraging staff to take holiday or work from home. Food and drug stores, as well as post offices and banks, will remain open. Public transport will continue to run. The new measures will last for two weeks.

In a televised announcement to the nation Wednesday night, Conte said the government decided to bring in the measures gradually and the whole country would now turn into a “protected zone rather than a red one.”

Italy went into lockdown on Tuesday, after Conte announced that schools and universities as well as public venues, including cinemas, theaters and gyms, would remain shut until April 3.
