London and other U.K. cities will be upgraded to a tier two alert level as coronavirus cases surge.

The U.K. government is tightening COVID-19 restrictions in London, Birmingham and other cities as the coronavirus continues to spread “exponentially” throughout the region.

The government on Thursday announced London and other U.K. cities will be upgraded from a tier one “medium” alert level to a tier two “high” alert level — the second-highest level under England’s new three-tier system to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

Under the new rules, Londoners will not be allowed to meet indoors with people from outside their household, including in private homes and businesses. People may still visit pubs, bars and restaurants, but only with people from the same household. Residents can meet friends and family outdoors, but only in a group of up to six people.

The rules go into effect one minute after midnight Friday.
