No new Canadian COVID-19 deaths reported for first time since mid-March

Canada reported no new deaths related to COVID-19 within a one-day span this past Friday, a first for the country since March 15, Reuters reports. 

According to news agency, the country had reported a total of 9,163 COVID-19 deaths on Thursday and the toll remained the same the following day.

Canada also reported 702 new cases of the disease in the same span, bringing the overall number of cases the country has reported in the past several months to 135,626 cases on Friday, Reuters reports. 

As of Sunday, the country has reported 9,170 deaths related to COVID-19, government health data shows. 

Canada joined a number of countries across the world earlier this year by imposing lockdowns in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19. While Canada has moved forward with easing certain restrictions across the country in recent months, provinces like Ontario, the country’s most populous, have been slower to reopen amid rising cases, according to Bloomberg.

“The latest trends in numbers have raised some concerns, especially as we begin to reopen schools and post-secondary institutions,” Health Minister Christine Elliott told reporters this past week after Ontario saw an uptick in COVID-19 numbers.

“We will be taking a pause of four weeks — or two, two-week cycles of the virus — before considering any further loosening of public health measures or further reopening of businesses, facilities and organizations,” she continued. 

The country’s border, which was closed to the U.S. for non-essential travel following an agreement between the two nations in March, is also scheduled to stay closed until late September, according to the BBC.
