Shrugging off allegations of self-dealing, Trump picks his Doral resort for G-7 summit

The decision is set to become a part of the ongoing impeachment inquiry into whether the U.S. president is violating the Constitution’s emoluments clause.

Amid an impeachment investigation into his personal businesses, President Donald Trump has decided to hold next year’s G-7 summit of world leaders at one of his own resorts, Trump National Doral Miami.

The decision, which was announced Thursday by acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney at the White House, was immediately met with a barrage of criticism by lawmakers and ethics experts who accuse Trump of using the presidency to boost his revenue and violating the Constitution by accepting money from foreign governments.

Trump suggested to his staff that they consider holding the summit at Doral when they began considering sites for the event next June 10-12, Mulvaney told reporters. After considering 12 locations, Doral was chosen. “It’s not the only place,” he said. “It’s the best place.”

Mulvaney said Trump would hold the event at cost and would not personally profit off the choice of venue “in any way, shape or form.”

“I would simply ask you all to consider the possibility that Donald Trump’s brand is probably strong enough as it is and he doesn’t need any more help on that,” he said. “It’s the most recognizable name in the English language and probably around the world right now.”

Last month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi opened an impeachment inquiry that includes whether Trump illegally making money off his presidency.

The emoluments clause of the Constitution forbids a president from profiting from foreign governments or receiving any money from the U.S. government except his or her annual salary.
