Ted Cruz won another congressional district convention in Colorado last night. With the win Cruz adds three more delegates to his six in Colorado. With the 25 of 34 selected delegates remaining, Cruz has now swept 9. The state GOP awards 25 more delegates over the next two days.
The win is another strong indication of the Cruz campaign’s strength in caucus and convention states. The Trump campaign fired its top operative in Colorado last week, and the new operative has been on the ground for a very short time. That could be the reason that two of the three Trump delegate names were not even up for election.
The three members of Cruz’s slate Anil Mathai, George Athanasopoulos, and Libby Szabo were elected as delegates last night. Mathai ran as an unbound delegate as a party chair. Athanasopoulos is the CD 7 candidate for congress who received over 85 percent of the vote at the caucus, he ran as an unbound delegate as well. Alexandra Jaffe of NBC News reported that both would be signing pledges of support to Cruz now that the election is over.
