The U.S. ambassador to Pakistan was reportedly summoned to the foreign ministry over a tweet from President Trump that accused the government in Islamabad of “lies & deceit.”

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy confirmed to Reuters that Ambassador David Hale met with the Pakistani foreign office.

Trump said on Monday that Pakistan harbors terrorists while the U.S. provides it with aid.

“The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools,” Trump wrote in his first tweet of the New Year.

“They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!”

An official on the National Security Council told Reuters that the U.S. “at this time” is not preparing to send Pakistan an aid package of $255 million.

Pakistan’s defense minister slammed Trump’s Monday tweet, saying the U.S. has given Pakistan “nothing but invective & mistrust.”
