Moore, the charismatic best-selling author sweeps into office as the darling of the Democratic party, notching endorsements from Obama, Biden and Oprah Winfrey–amid whispers of a potential White House run.

Maryland Democrats, shut out of the governor’s mansion the last eight years, have swept back into power and in the process broke the color barrier by electing the state’s first ever Black chief executive.

Wes Moore, a charismatic best-selling author and former head of the anti-poverty organization Robin Hood, becomes only the third Black elected governor in this nation’s history. As of midnight, Moore was leading with 59.7 percent of the vote.

The governor-elect came out on stage to an enthusiastic crowd primed for a celebration. Long before the race was called, Moore’s campaign headquarters at the Marriott Waterfront in Baltimore felt more like a club, with folks bobbing and swaying to a DJ spinning contemporary and classic R&B, including Montell Jordan’s megahit “This is How We Do It,” Cheryl Lynn’s “Encore” and Aretha Franklin’s “Rock Steady.”

Moore took to the stage, accompanied by his wife Dawn and their two children, Mia and James, as the Whitney Houston and Kygo hit, “Higher Love” blasted over the speakers.

“What an amazing night,” Moore said, “and what an improbable journey.”

Moore joins only Douglas Wilder of Virginia and Deval Patrick as the only Black governors elected in this nation’s 246-year history.
